Book Report on George Orwells Burmese Days The book â€Å"Burmese Days† was written by George Orwell and published first in 1934. Orwell took the inspiration for this first novel of his from the experiences he gained during his service as an imperial police officer in Burma in the late 1920s. There he was confronted with extreme forms of imperialism, causing racism and also chauvinism. These are also the main topics of the novel and although they are wrapped up in the story of a single man’s fate, John Flory’s, these topics caused some problems with the publishing of the book. Maybe Orwell’s real impression of the Burmese wasn’t as positive as one could think while reading the passages about the behaviour of the En glish, sometimes he even seems to loathe the Burmese, but then again his Marxist ideas force him to write in favour of the socially disgraced. Orwell points out this conflict very consciously, as his own comment on his service in Burma proofs: â€Å"I was in the Indian Police for five years, and by the end of that time I hated the imperialism I was serving with a bitterness which I probably cannot make clear. [...] I had reduced everything to the simple theory that the oppressed are always right and the oppressors are always wrong: a mistaken theory, but the natural result of being one of the oppressors yourself. I felt I had got to escape not merely from imperialism but from every form of man’s dominion over man. (George Orwell) In the novel George Orwell also gives a very detailed description of the Burmese landscape and its flora. It is typical for the author to draw parallels between the mental state of the main characters and their environment and so he does in the book. He describes the exotic plant life in Burma clearly and links it up to John Flory’s feeling of being a stranger in a strange country. ABSTRACT Nowadays, conventional software development methods have gradually been replaced by agile software development methods. This phenomenon is mainly due to the conventional methods’ shortcomings, including a slow adaptation to rapidly changing requirements, and a tendency to be over budget and behind schedule. That is true that they wrong people are getting their prescription for the wrong reason but they shouldn’t close down all dispensaries because all those people who really do need it are going to have trouble getting their medicine. My perspective on prescription medical marijuana is that people should be allowed to get their medical card because they need the medicine to help them. It is wrong that people get the card for the wrong reason but there are many people that have the card for the right reason and they just want marijuana so they can survive and help them. Marijuana should be legalized because the government would be able to make a lot of money by taxing it because a lot of people are going to buy this crop. However, while the sample can be said to have been representative because it involved a large age margin, it was only focused on members of the Caucasian group. This means that its reliability outside this group of people cannot be established because the ease of influencing people may vary based on their attributes such as race. One of the warning signs related to pseudo-scientific claims is Overreliance on anecdotes. This emphasizes on the importance of statements to be supported by data gathered from a study instead of opinions from individuals because a single persons observation may be prejudiced or lack the merit that is required to represent the whole group. The study analyzed was conducted by doctor Zoosk and a number of other individuals .This means that then opinions were not based on the opinions of a single individual. Similarly the findings were based on a two studies involving 250 adults. This signifies the fact that the study was based on evidence and not mere imaginations or statements from the doctor and his colleagues. 2nd Part The core business of any research is to come up with findings that are reliable and which satisfy the objective of the research. This makes important every aspect of the research including the methods used and other factors considered in the research. There are different aspects of research methods that are used they include, representativeness of the population sample, use of a control group, ethical considerations among others. Control group in research refers to the group in an experiment that is not subjected to any form of treatment and which is used as the standard for assessing the change brought about by the treatment .Comparing the control group with the treated group enables a researcher to easily note the changes that are brought about by the treatment. A control group therefore forms an important component of research if the researcher intends to come up with reliable research findings. Based on the case study, researchers have concluded that PRD therapy can reduce anxiety levels in people and make them more happy and positive. However these findings could have been more reliable if there was a control group that could have been used in the study. The control group would have helped in establishing the actual changes without any assumptions, making the research more reliable.
